Bergamot
Citrus bergamot "bergamia"
is a fruit the size of an orange, with a yellow colour similar to a lemon, and a pleasant fragrance. The green-tinted oil gained favor only after the tree was brought to Bergamot, in the Lombardi region of Italy, in the fifteenth century. The bergamot (Citrus bergamia) belongs to the orange family.
Citrus bergamot is commercially grown in Calabria (Italy), where more than 80% are found, and some in France, and in the Ivory Coast. Bergamot grows on small trees which blossom during the winter.
According to legend, Christopher Columbus brought the tree to the Caribbean, where it was popularly used in voodoo practices to protect one from misfortune. Carrying the dried fruit in your pocket was thought to keep travelers safe on their journeys and soothe the stress of traveling.
The distinctive aroma of the bergamot is most commonly known for its use in Earl Grey tea, though the juice of the fruit has also been used in Calabrian indigenous medicine as a herbal remedy for malaria, and its essential oil is popular in aromatherapy applications.
Bergamot essential oil has an inspiring and unwinding effect. It calms as well as stimulates the nerves. Recommended for depression or restlessness. The uplifting or inspiring features of this essential oil facilitates grief-stricken people to become more open and positive. Bergamot can help induce feelings of happiness and love, self-reliance, valour and acumen.
